Last week, after 12 years of service as a science teacher and Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), I resigned from the Fullerton School District, effective this Friday. Beginning on the 28th of this month, I will serve the Orange County Department of Education as the new STEM Administrator. In that capacity, I will work closely with an amazing team to serve all of our Orange County school districts as we work to empower all learners to use innovation and inquiry to better our world. And this work, of course, includes the Fullerton School District.
I'd be remiss if I didn't take a moment to thank a lot of people who've been important on my journey. Simply put, I would not be the educator I am today were it not for my experiences in Fullerton. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Sue, who gave me my start in teaching at Beechwood. I know I was super young, but I'm thankful you took a chance on me. Thank you, Ramon. Sometimes you drove me bonkers, but you had a steadfast belief in me and my ability that, over time, gave me an unwavering confidence that has served me well. Thank you, Julie, for showing me what it takes to lead with grace and integrity, even when it's damn hard...and for crying with me when I realized it was time to leave Beechwood and take on the TOSA role. Thank you also to Dr. Pletka, Janet, and Emy for the opportunity to expand my leadership skills as a TOSA. It's a very different world - teaching adults - and it's one that I've loved dearly. Thanks also to Trang, my boss for this past year, for your support. To my friends who've been quietly cheering me on behind the scenes for the past three months, thank you. And a very special shout out to the awesome Kyle, Lauralyn, Vicky, Janice, George, and the entire Ed Services team. Y'all were such a blast to work with and I know we'll still have opportunities to work together in the future. I'll miss you more than I can express. (But this is not goodbye!)
To the teachers with whom I've had the singular pleasure of working with for the past twelve years, thank you. Thank you for the opportunity to learn alongside each and every one of you. It's been quite a journey, hasn't it? As I step away from FSD, I have two requests of you:
- Keep on pushing ahead and learning. Don't you dare stop! ;)
- And, please, above all, be kind to whomever they hire to take this TOSA position. It's a heckuva learning curve. Whomever FSD hires will have a lot to learn, just as I did when I started as a TOSA. Give them the grace to figure it out and please be patient with them.
And to my husband, Craig, thank you for all of your support. I don't know that I would have made it through this process and all of it's seemingly endless waiting without you.
With love, gratitude, and excitement for the future,
PS. My FSD email address will be cut off at some point in the near future. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need me.
