Module VI, Digital Citizenship

Introduction:

The sixth LECFTA module, "Digital Citizenship," explores the different components that comprise digital citizenship, including issues surrounding copyright and plagiarism, cyberbullying and cybersafety.

Module VI Reflection - ISTE Standard #5. Digital Citizenship

Educational Administrators model and facilitate understanding of social, ethical and legal issues and responsibilities related to an evolving digital culture. 

  • Ensure equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources to meet the needs of all learners
  • Promote, model and establish policies for safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology 
  • Promote and model responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information 
  • Model and facilitate the development of a shared cultural understanding and involvement in global issues through the use of contemporary communication and collaboration tools

Strengths:

Our STEM team has a strong emphasis on equitable access to STEM education for all learners within Orange County.  While we haven't focused extensively, to date, on digital tools or resources, they're certainly relevant to our work.  In short, this area is well-aligned with our work as a STEM team.  We do model responsible social interactions through our team social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Weaknesses:

I've not had, to date, very many opportunities to work with local districts to promote or establish policies for the legal and ethical use of digital information and technology.  I have much to learn still on the legal parameters that schools and districts must work within in order to ensure the safety of students.

Next Steps:

Explore opportunities to increase our teams work in the area of educational technology in the coming year.  One idea might be to have team members pursue a certification offered by an educational technology company.
